Look forward to seeing everyone there. Also, Elizabeth Gerlock asked me to forward the following request. Please consider helping with refreshments this year. Hi TTA Members, An important part of our monthly meetings is our time to socialize after the meeting and program. We greet visitors and new members and catch up with old friends and acquaintances. Our refreshments are a means to make these connections happen. I have volunteered to coordinate refreshments for 2008 and Jenice Johnson has graciously volunteered to be my back-up. We need volunteers to bring drinks and snacks. The chapter provides all paper goods. Listed below are the dates we need refreshments. Please consider providing them once during the year. Either call me at 356-6260 or 516-3478 (cell) or e-mail me at eygerlock at bellsouth.net if you can assume responsibility for one month or let me know later if dates are too far in the future. Want to watch some serious Eco-adventure films? Films that feature a broad cross-section of styles and themes; including climbing, skiing, kayaking, adventure, culture and the environment. Banff Mountain Film Festival's World Tour is coming to Nashville on Tuesday, March 25, 2008. For thirty-two years the Banff Mountain Film Festival (BMFF) has been celebrating the spirit of adventure and the mountain environment. Each November, the world's best films on mountain (and outdoors) themes draw an international audience to the town of Banff, Canada, located in the Canadian Rockies. Then about twenty years ago, BMFF began an outreach program to extend the festival to other communities and to people who cannot make the annual trek to the Canadian Rockies. Festival organizers wanted to showcase the efforts and talents of the world's finest mountain filmmakers. Today, the best films from each year's festival go on tour immediately following the three-day event in Banff. The BMFF tour makes its only stop in Tennessee in Nashville at Montgomery Bell Academy's Paschall Theater (in the Davis Building ? 4001 Harding Road) on Tuesday, March 25, at 7:00 p.m. (CT). Tickets will be available around March 10 at Blue Ridge Mountain Sports (615-356-2300) at 108 Page Rd in Belle Meade ahead of the show for $10 per person. Please note, due to the popularity of this event ? and tends to sell out - it is wise to purchase your tickets at Blue Ridge Mountain Sports ahead of time. This event is for everyone; whether you are an experienced mountaineer or an armchair adventurer, you won't want to miss the best of mountain and outdoor adventure films on the big screen! Sept. 27 at Montgomery Bell State Park in Burns, TN, an event is planned that is right up your alley. Brandon Puttbrese of Get Fit Tennessee (a state program under a wing of the Tenn. Dept. of Health) has told us that Montgomery Bell will be celebrating National Public Lands Day by promoting the park's 19 miles of hiking trails, 20 miles of mountain bike trails, and the lake's many recreational opportunities. They'll also be doing a clean-up. We have an opportunity to have the TTA display there if some people can be found to populate it. (I will have to be out of town - the organization I work for, the Tennessee Parks and Greenways Foundation, has a major land dedication on Saturday and that is where I will need to be.) I will have the display with me at the meeting, and hope to find some willing folks to represent us at this event. Libby Francis will be giving us a program on her recent travels in Arizona; we'll be talking about some great hikes coming up, and it will be good to have you with us. Since all of you may not be attending tomorrow night to get the word in person, here's a message from Libby, who serves our chapter as outings coordinator: HIKE INFORMATION UPDATE: The leader and contact person for the December 7, Radnor Lake Hike was left out of the newsletter. The contact person is Elizabeth Gerlock, 615-356-6260. They will meet at 1:00 at the Nature Center. If you haven't attended a Nashville chapter TTA meeting before, directions are below. We have refreshments and time to socialize following our meeting and we hope to see you there. DIRECTIONS: From the intersection of Edmondson Pike with Old Hickory Blvd (at Nippers Corner), go north 1.5 miles, then turn left into the back entrance of Ellington Agricultural Center. Go 1/2 mile, then bear right up the hill. TWRA is on the right. (map). Here is some updating information on two hikes coming up. December 7, Sunday, from Elizabeth Gerlock: We will offer two options: Carol Smith will lead a hike covering both ridges, Ganier Ridge Trail and South Cove Loop Trail. I will lead a hike on the Lake Trail and the South Lake Trail. We will both meet at 1:00 pm. They can call me at 356-6260 or my cell phone at 516-3478. Thanks. Elizabeth December 13, Saturday week: We will meet at the Kinko's just north of the Donelson Pike exit off I-40. I will have maps in case we need to take more than one vehicle. The meeting time is still 8 a.m. Be sure to watch the weather; if it's raining we will need to reschedule, as this hike is a bushwhack beside a streamcourse that can get way too slippery in rainy weather. Be sure to bring lunch or snacks and water. We will plan on stopping off for hot beverages or a meal at the Soup Kitchen in Cookeville, or the group's preference. If you're not hungry we can at least stop off at Poet's Corner coffee shop and get the best eggnog latte for miles around. PLEASE NOTE: I will be reachable only by cell from the time you see this until Friday evening on the 12th. Dec. 23; and some good news Message-ID: <008f01c964b0$e0893580$faf5e447@default> Hello, everyone, I hope you're all ready to enjoy the holiday season. This is your reminder that our Christmas party on Dec. 6 took the place of our regular monthly meeting. There will be no meeting Tuesday, December 23. We'll meet again on Tuesday, January 27, when our speaker will be Kathleen Williams, executive director of the Tennessee Parks and Greenways Foundation. We will get together at our regular time of 7 p.m. at the Region 2 office of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency on the Ellington Agricultural Center campus. Here's a link - http://atlas.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?latlongtype=decimal&latitude=36.064&longitude=-86.7425&zoom=7 Some great news - and thanks! : Diane Manas recruited some "elves" and organized a gift-wrapping fundraiser on Sunday, Dec. 14, and on Sat. Dec. 20 at REI, where generous customers netted $510 for the Cumberland Trail Conference's food fund for the BreakAway program (an alternative spring break during which college students volunteer their time helping build the Cumberland Trail). Special thanks to Diane and to Karl Dupre, Libby Francis, Ann Hook, Tony Hook (Manager, Cumberland Trail Conference), Jenice Johnson, Sue Lefferts, Dorothy Lesch, Garnett Rush, Jill Tarchala, and Julie Walski. For those of you who may not be familiary with BreakAway and what it means to TTA, here is a good synopsis from Diane: "BreakAway is an alternative spring break program offered to colleges/universities across the nation where the students voluntarily give up an opportunity to vacation (and party) wherever, and to make a difference in the world (today and for the future), by coming to the Cumberland Plateau and lovingly help to build the Cumberland Trail. Currently, there are about 5-6 colleges signed up each week participating, and they each will send at least 8-12 students, after 4 weeks that's about 20-24 colleges and as many as 190+/- student volunteers. Colleges offer many choices to the students for their Spring Break alternatives so we are very fortunate to know that they REALLY sign on for this - and that THEY make this decision to come here! Keep in mind, it also takes many local volunteers to help with teaching trail building techniques, leading "teams" into the trail work sites, etc. and that this donation also covers their meals - we all know that no one works very well on an empty stomach." Thanks again to all who supported the gift-wrapping effort, and holiday greetings to all of you.
