Message-ID: <005c01c9801e$f4aa1050$c2f5e447@default> Good evening, everyone, I hope you're enjoying Tennessee's trails in 2009. This is your reminder that we resume our regular meeting schedule tomorrow night, at 7 p.m. at the Region 2 headquarters of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency on the Ellington Agricultural Center campus. We've had a change in the actual speaker, but not the subject. Dianne Naff, who is Land Acquisitions Manager for the Tennessee Parks and Greenways Foundation, will be presenting our program on the Foundation's work, future plans, and its role in the acquisition and support of some of Tennessee's favorite hiking trails. She'll be talking about some exciting opportunities coming up, so do plan on being with us. We'll also be discussing changes in leadership for the local group, and a possible new meeting place - the new meeting space at REI. Do come for the information and make your voice heard as we make plans for hiking and trail building in the new year. Be sure to stay to socialize and enjoy refreshments following our meeting and program. If you're joining us for the first time, here's how to find us: DIRECTIONS: From the intersection of Edmondson Pike with Old Hickory Blvd (at Nippers Corner), go north 1.5 miles, then turn left into the back entrance of Ellington Agricultural Center. Go 1/2 mile, then bear right up the hill. TWRA is on the right. Here's a link for a map: http://atlas.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?latlongtype=decimal&latitude=36.064&longitude=-86.7425&zoom=7 We'll look forward to seeing you! Due to this morning's weather predictions for tonight, we are not having the January TTA meeting. We will send out scheduling updates and announcements by e-mail or phone concerning matters that can't wait until the regularly scheduled February meeting. Items that were on the agenda for tonight - new officers and a possible new meeting place, among others, will be deferred until February. That that will allow more time to give input to the people on the nominating committee - Jenice Johnson, Sue Lefferts, and Elizabeth Gerlock - about good people to serve as a chapter chair, program chair, hiking coordinator, or any other role that will help our chapter to thrive. If you need their contact information and don't have a directory, contact me and I'll put you in touch. Thanks for your support of TTA, and see you on the trail and at the February meeting. We have a matter before us that needs to be made known to the whole Nashville membership, as it requires a decision. Chatper Treasurer Doug Burroughs reports that the chapter has a balance of $2917.34 after donating the $510 raised by the gift wrappers at REI (Thanks again to REI, Diane Manas and her "elves"). He is asking us to decide on the donation of those funds as allocated here: Cumberland Trail Conference $775 (we donated $300 last year) Beaman Park $375 Greenways for Nashville $250 Radnor Lake $100 Warner Parks $1,000* *Here is the information that may clarify why this proposed allocation is so heavily weighted to Warner Parks, for this year only, copied from the Friends of Warner Parks website (http://www.friendsofwarnerparks.com/) : "Friends close to goal after Hill Tract price is reduced Friends of Warner Parks is within striking distance of its goal to buy more than 322 acres of undeveloped forestland, much of it untouched since the founding of America. Located across Highway 100 from Percy and Edwin Warner Parks, the Hill Tract is valued at $17 million. The Hill Company, in recognition of FRIENDS' significant fundraising progress in what has been a difficult economic environment, has offered to lower the asking price of $13,250,000 to $10,800,000. They want us to succeed so that the land will be preserved forever. This reduction in price is conditioned upon FRIENDS making a firm decision by the end of January as to whether or not we will be comfortable in proceeding to close. Over the next 45 days we will make a concerted effort to obtain contributions and pledges in an amount which will give us the necessary confidence to borrow the "gap" funds needed to proceed to closing. We have traveled a long road to get to this point. If we all push together, we can achieve this worthy goal." (Thanks to Doug Burroughs for getting the information.) As you can see, a decision is eminent on for Friends of Warner Parks. As much as we local hikers use their trails, this is a good opportunity to support this effort, and is at the heart of the TTA mission: "To promote, construct and maintain a statewide system of hiking trails, and to work for the conservation of natural resources ihherent to this objective." We need to approve or not approve the allocation in a timely manner so we can present a check of whatever size you decide to Friends of Warner Parks very soon. (We can contact them to confirm a pledge and lodge our intention in case we can't physically deliver a check by the 31st.) Now we need a vote, folks. Please reply to this e-mail as soon as you can, and let me know: Yes, I approve this allocation OR No, I prefer a different allocation (please detail your own allocation figures) IF NOs PREVAIL, WE WILL SORT OUT YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS AND THE MAJORITY FIGURES WILL BE USED TO PREPARE THE DONATION CHECKS. Just please let your voice be heard, and thank you in advance for your consideration in a big hurry. Several members as well as the TTA webmaster have informed me that for many of you (though not all) there was a problem with replying to the message. Since Comcast subscribers (me included) don't get the e-mail in the first place, I could only view the message as I sent it and was unaware of the problem for a couple of hours. So, please accept my apologies for the glitch, and now for a renewed request: Please review yesterday's message, bearing in mind something Anne Wesley wisely pointed out: The increased 2009 support for "Warner Parks" as detailed in yesterday's message should more specifically have read, "Friends of Warner Parks' Hill Tract acquisition fund." In this way we will not be contributing the money to any entity other than that specific project. PLEASE SEND A RESPONSE DIRECTLY TO THE E-MAIL ADDRESS BELOW: nora_beck at comcast.net If you have questions, please call me at 517-6486. You may want to read this endorsement from member Garnett Rush, which offers an opportunity for individuals to support of the Hill Tract acquisition: "Yes, I approve this allocation - especially amount for Friends of Warner Parks. I have hiked this tract and it is absolutely breath taking. It would be "un-natural" not to preserve it. This is the largest stand of old growth forest in a city area east of the Mississippi. There are over 20 varieties of oaks as well as huge sycamores, hickories and other trees. There are even a few remnants of the NA mighty chestnut (all dead and fallen, but still impressive). I personally encourage every person who is in any way able to make a personal contribution to this worthy effort for our town. Eleanor WIllis (370-8053) is the contact person for making pledges - every little bit helps. -- Garnett" Thanks again for your patience, everyone, and I will look forward to hearing from you.
