Message-ID: <4B58C7BE.70708@blomand.net> From: Leanna Joyner - ATC APPALACHIAN TRAIL CONSERVANCY OFFERS DISCOUNTS ON TENNESSEE A.T. LICENSE PLATES THROUGH EASTMAN CHEMICAL COMPANY FOUNDATION GRANT (KINGSPORT, Tenn, January 19, 2010)?A grant from the Eastman Chemical Company Foundation is allowing the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) to underwrite discounts on the fees for the next 500 people to apply for an Appalachian Trail license plate in Tennessee. Once 1,000 applications are received and the state begins producing tags, ATC?s share of the renewal fees will serve as a permanent funding source for the organization's work to protect and maintain the 280 miles of the Appalachian Trail in the state. As a result of the grant, the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) license plates are now available for $15 instead of the usual $35 annual fee. Renewals will be at the standard $35 annual fee. ATC is offering its own incentive as well, thanking people who sign up for the license plate with a one-time annual membership to the national nonprofit. Existing ATC members may give someone else the membership as a gift. The specialty A.T. license-plate program will benefit the state?s natural resources and national treasure in several ways. It will broaden awareness for this resource by widely promoting the Trail on vehicles from Memphis to Bristol. In addition, each plate will generate $15.56 annually for ATC, supporting management of such programs as land conservation, volunteer-based trail and facilities maintenance, natural-resources management, and programs that introduce children and teachers to the A. T. in Tennessee. The Tennessee State Recreation Plan calls the A.T. ?Tennessee?s First Recreation Trail,? and the A.T. frequently receives accolades, such as ?#2 of Top 10 USA Outdoor Adventures? (ABC?s ?Good Morning, America? and National Geographic) and ?Favorite Long Distance Trail? (by the readers of Backpacker magazine). For more information and an application to take advantage of this offer, call ATC at (828) 254-3708 or go on line to www.appalachiantrail.org/tnlicenseplate. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy is a volunteer-based organization dedicated to the preservation and management of the natural, scenic, historic, and cultural resources associated with the Appalachian National Scenic Trail in order to provide primitive outdoor-recreation and educational opportunities for Trail visitors. Message-ID: <00db01ca9c5a$1b611f60$ed52f062@default> Hello, everyone, I hope you can all come to the TTA meeting on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at REI. We'll be in the upstairs meeting room instead of our usual space; and our program this evening will be a planning meeting for the coming year's activities. We'll have information on some great hiking opportunities coming up; and we'll work out dates for honoring our commitment to Cumberland Tral stewardship along the Obed River segment just north of Crossville. We'll have information on Spring BreakAway on the Cumberland Trail also, as well as other ways you can be involved in the mission of TTA. Let's get together and plan a great year! The change is due to my error in "double-booking" February, actually. The shakedown: Jonathan Schmidt will share his ultimate outdoor experiences in the Badlands with us in February; and Dorothy and Jim Lesch and their Egypt travelogue will be with us for the March meeting.) Please plan to be with us for those meetings, too! Call or e-mail me with questions, program suggestions for the future, admonitions, etc. Cheers, Nora Beck nora_beck at comcast.net 615-517-6486 cell -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Waterfall tour filling up fast Message-ID: <010a01caa728$85c26340$ed52f062@default> Hello, everyone, we have a hiking opportunity that can't wait for the next newsletter. The Division of Natural Areas waterfall tour, including three short hikes, will take place on the first day of spring - March 20. The total attendance is limited to 12 people because the Division of Natural Areas is guiding this tour to places where parking is extremely limited; they are furnishing transportation from Nashville in their van. So, if you want to go you need to sign up immediately by contacting Roger McCoy at roger.mccoy at tn.gov or calling him at 615-532-0437. If contacting him by e-mail (recommended, so your e-mail will be in the queue when he opens them on the next business day), please include your name, e-mail and phone number in the body of the message, preferably listing your cell #, so that you can receive a call if there is a last-minute change of plans due to severe weather. Don't wait! Day-of info, Sat., March 20: Plan on meeting at 9 a.m. sharp in the K-mart parking lot on Donelson Pike (for GPS or Mapquesting purposes, that's 530 Donelson Pike, Nashville, TN 37214). Plan on bringing lunch/snacks/beverages, the usual season-appropriate layers and comfortable shoes. Since we'll be near waterfalls, you'll want shoes with good traction. Don't forget a camera - we'll be touring some truly scenic places. You can read Roger's announcement of this outing at http://tn.gov/environment/na/pdf/events.pdf Several TTA members can personally vouch for the beauty of Cummins Falls, the largest-magnitude waterfall still in private ownership in the state of Tennessee. The others on the tour are Waterloo Falls and Crawford Mill falls, and all three are pretty close together in Overton and Jackson Counties. If there's time we'll get to take in Wash Morgan Hollow State Natural Area, along the Roaring River State Scenic River, which is a treasure in its own right. Check out Tennessee's 80 State Natural Areas at http://tn.gov/environment/na/natareas/ . If you want more info on waterfalls, you can go to http://www.cs.utk.edu/~dunigan/landforms/ where UT prof. Dr. Tom Dunigan has a great directory that includes Tennessee waterfalls - did you know there are over 630 now listed? A great site for picking hiking destinations . . . See on you March 20! Nora B. Our program presenter will be Lou Ann Partington. You may recognize her name - she edits the statewide TTA newsletter. Her day job, and her personal professional commitment, is wildlife rehabilitation, and she is travelling from Tullahoma to tell us about her work. She works with many different animals, and their needs are as diverse as their species. Lou Ann has a "wish list" of items that are always needed to care for her charges, and I hope you can bring an item to donate for Lou Ann to use in her work. Here's the list: Paper towels Kleenex (or any other kind of facial tissue - just as long as it's the plain old stuff, and not the kind with lotion or perfumes) Apples Potatoes Gift cards to grocery stores or Wal-Mart (so that I can purchase the perishable supplies as they are needed) Finch Seed Sunflower Seed Nyjer Seed Bungee Cords Just in case you haven't been to a meeting in a while, we gather at 7 p.m. at REI in Brentwood (for on-line mapping purposes or to plug in your navigator, that's 261 Franklin Road, Brentwood, TN 37027). The store has a great community room at the far side of the store from the entrance. Following a brief business meeting and announcements, we'll get the low-down from Lou Ann about wildlife rehabilitation; and we hope you'll linger for refreshments and time to socialize afterward. Call the WP Nature Center at 615-352-6299 for times and what to bring. Doug Burroughs at 615-292-9307, will be our TTA contact person. Beaman Park: There will be a workday and hike 8:00 A.M., hiking with naturalist Durwood Edwards to search for seldom seen woodland birds. Expect to hike about 3 miles. Wear good shoes and bring water. From 9 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., join us as we continue work on an ADA accessible boardwalk. We will provide work gloves, training, and tools. Refreshments and snacks will be served. Stay as little or as long as you would like. Leaders: Friends of Beaman Park Radnor Lake: After the Nashville flood, Radnor Lake is now partially open but there is a lot of work to get it back to normal. Rangers have scheduled Special Volunteer Saturdays for cleanup and trail work. If you can help out, meet at the Visitor Center at 8 a.m. Work will end about noon. Meriwether Lewis Park: This 3.5 mile easy to moderate ridge and streamside forest loop travels some very historic ground. We visit the site of Meriwether Lewis' burial, the historic Natchez Trace, and Grinders Stand cabin. The Little Swan Creek valley is always beautiful. If there is interest, we will hike the Devil's Backbone loop just down the road following this hike. You will need sturdy boots, snacks and lunch, and lots of water. Contact Libby Francis at libbyslibbys at comcast.net to register and get car pooling details. Here is an AT backpack opportunity from Raymond Myers: Summer Solstice-Fathers Day Appalachian Trail rhododendron hike Tentatively, I am planning an easy, long-weekend, 37.9-mile hike on the Appalachian Trail over the June 18-21, 2010 weekend. This happens to include Fathers Day and the Summer Solstice. Anyone interested, if indeed I go? Here are current "plans" (subject to change): Friday: 9:00 a.m. - Leave Nashville, drive to area of Marion, Virginia Leave vehicle(s) at Happy Hiker Hollow AT "hostel" near Atkins Be shuttled to Dickey Gap on the Appalachian Trail Hike 3.9 miles to Trimpi Shelter Saturday: Hike 10.6 miles from Trimpi Shelter to Partnership Shelter (one of the fanciest shelters on the entire AT) at the Mt. Rogers National Recreation Area headquarters and Visitors Center Order pizza delivery for dinner! Sunday: Hike 11.6 miles from Partnership Shelter/Mt. Rogers VC to I-81/Atkins, VA Be shuttled back to Happy Hiker Hollow Hostel for dinner and overnight stay Monday: Breakfast at HHHH Hike 11.8 miles from Atkins/I-81 to Virginia highway 42 Be shuttled back to our vehicles at the HHHH in the afternoon. Drive home to Nashville that evening. These mileages are considered "easy" by AT hikers, but probably strenuous by many Nashville area hikers. You decide for yourself. We'll be in the mountains, but there are no terrible mountains to climb. The rhododendron, azaleas, and mountain laurel should be in bloom, but we should avoid all the tourist crowds who drive to Roan Mountain in Tennessee. Questions?
