She had spent the day on a trail in our area, trimming and picking up trash, as she always loved to do. Many of you know that Faith has been a long-time supporter and volunteer of the Cumberland Trail Conference. Faith was the founder of our Chapter, and her absence will prove to be a heavy loss to our hiking club. As you can imagine, this is a very sad and difficult time for her faithful husband, Ed. Do remember him in your prayers and thoughts. A memorial service for Faith will be held this coming Saturday, October 18, at 3:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) at the First Presbyterian Church in La Follette, TN. Randy Hedgepath, State Naturalist, will be leading a nature hike/trail maintenance event at Edgar Evins State Park. We will be doing light trail work while Randy points out the flora and fauna that are prevalent in late fall/early winter. If you would like to learn more about nature in this season and also help our trails, this is a wonderful opportunity to do both. We will start at 9:00 am and be back by 3:00 pm. Bring a lunch and plenty of water. Dress according to weather conditions. Wear sturdy footwear and bring work gloves. Tools will be furnished, but if you have a favorite tool you may bring your own. This is a wonderful opportunity for TTA and State Parks to form a cooperation that will benefit both. Please make an effort to come out and enjoy the day and also help with a project improving our trails. If there is a substantial participation, the Friends of Edgar Evins State Park will host a cook-out after the event. Please contact Fount Bertram at 615-765-5357 or fwbertram at dtccom.net if you are planning to be there. Randy Hedgepath, the TN State Naturalist, will lead a day of light trail work and nature hike Saturday at Edgar Evins State Park, on Centerhill Lake, near Smithville. Those who attended the recent TTA Annual Meeting will know that this park is next door to the place where the event was held. Several hikers at the Annual Meeting rode the Edgar Evins State Park pontoon boat to the park and back. This may be another chance to ride the boat again as Randy has plans to use it to take the participants to the work site on Saturday. Meet at 9 AM Central Time at the Park's Office. The plan is to work and hike until about 3 PM. Bring snacks, water, and a sack lunch. Wear sturdy work clothes and footwear you don't mind getting dirty. Tools will be furnished, but if you have your own, you will be welcome to bring them. The restaurant at the park's marina will give participants a 10% discount on Saturday for those who wish to eat together after the event. Please contact Fount Bertram for more information and to let him know to expect you. His email address is fwbertram at dtccom.net or you may phone him at 615-765-5357. Message-ID: <4938114C.8020008@blomand.net> From: Tony Hook, General Manager, CTC A new year is here. A year that will offer many new challenges and opportunities for the Cumberland Trail Conference and the Cumberland Trail Project. As has already been reported, the State of Tennessee will cease supporting the operations of the Conference on June 30, 2009. However, the CTC does not see this as an insurmountable problem, only as a mountain to be climbed with many wondrous views once the summit is reached. The CTC is dedicated to the goal of working until there is a continuous trail from Signal Point to Cumberland Gap. In 2009, please consider supporting the CTC by assisting with Break-Away (Feb 22-March21) and other trail programs, and by continued financial support. Also, checkout the CTC website for new CT merchandise such as t-shirts, water bottles, coffee cups, and bumper stickers. For it is a fact, with the continued financial and volunteer trail support of TTA members, the goal of a complete trail will become a reality, creating a lasting legacy.
